I chose slipware for its innate raw-earth finish.
Before using this technique at Jean-Nicolas Gérard's,
I had discovered slip decoration in Marie Verlet's studio.
Already, contact with the raw object fascinated me. I became
conscious of what a privilege it is to touch earth in this
transitory state. Before passing irreversibly through the fire,
it is sensual, powdery, and the sound of the raw matter is soft
and round. Production is for me a time of intimacy and
discretion.
I feel a particular affection for useful objects. It's sad for me to imagine that the only contact with an object is that of a dust cloth... I like objects that are handled, touched every day... objects among which we can choose one or another. We can choose the one that takes our fancy on the spur of the moment... playfully or by chance. Concerned by the relation between function and form, I produce what I conceive to be everyday objects, there for our pleasure. And I imagine the intimacy of the studio continuing in the familiarity of day-by-day contacts with the object.
